主讲内容:

Professor Gordon Slethaugs lecture examines the evolution of American painting through the lens of mobility, tracing its deep connection to industrial progress and transportation infrastructure from the early nineteenth century to the postmodern period. It begins with the rise of American landscape painting shaped by Romanticism and Transcendentalism, which celebrated natural scenery while expressing skepticism toward industrial technology. As national infrastructure expanded and westward movement unfolded, artistic representations of mobility gradually evolved. Following the Civil War, realist and Impressionist works turned to modern urban mobility and mechanical transportation, reflecting changing ideas of progress. Later, artists explored trains, bridges, automobiles, highways, and urban transit, shifting from celebration to critical reflection on technology and modern life. The lecture reveals how mobility has been a central, defining theme in American art, illuminating cultural attitudes toward nature, industry, and modernity, and offering a unique perspective on the nations social and artistic transformation.
